How many mailboxes can you have on a single domain? The answer depends on your mailbox type and your deliverability goals.
Google Workspace: up to 20 mailboxes per domain (technical maximum)
Microsoft 365: similar limits apply
Azure mailboxes: up to 100 mailboxes per domain
SMTP mailboxes: up to 10 mailboxes per domain
For cold email deliverability, Icemail strongly recommends:
2–3 mailboxes per domain maximum
Do NOT put all your mailboxes on one domain
Use more domains with fewer mailboxes per domain rather than cramming many mailboxes onto one domain
Keeping mailbox density low per domain protects your domain reputation. If one mailbox gets flagged, it’s isolated rather than affecting your entire sending infrastructure.
If you try to add more mailboxes than a domain supports:
New mailboxes will fail to provision
Failed mailboxes will show a "failed" status in your dashboard
You will need to use a different domain for additional mailboxes
The most reliable way to scale your cold email infrastructure is to add more domains rather than adding more mailboxes per domain. For example:
Instead of 10 mailboxes on 1 domain → use 5 domains with 2 mailboxes each
This distributes sending volume and protects your reputation
It also gives you redundancy if one domain experiences deliverability issues
